
Pets are great! They bring loads of joy and happiness and can
really help cheer you up even on the worst day! Some of you may be new
to the joys of pet ownership and with that in mind we have developed a
helpful checklist for some of the most popular pets. The checklists are
not conclusive but will list some of the main items you may need in
order for things to run smoothly as your new pet settles in. In
addition, they will highlight specific animal needs such as lots of hay
for rabbits and guinea pigs, or flea and worming treatment for cats and
dogs.
New Puppy/Dog
Check-list
- Cage - helps with toilet training and provides a 'safe
place' during the day.
- Toilet Training Pads
- Puppy Trainer Spray
- Pee Post - encourages your puppy to toilet in a specific
area in the garden.
- Poo Bags
- Stain and Odour Remover - for when they wee on your carpet!
- Vet Bed - an invaluable bedding that effectively 'stays
dry' when puppies or dogs wee on it.
- Bed - the correct bed will help your new arrival feel more
secure so settling quicker and sleeping for longer
- Chew toys - durable chew toys will keep them entertained
for ages!
- Teething toys - designed for sharp, brittle puppy teeth.
Get them used to chewing toys and not shoes!
- Anti-chew spray - see above!
- Bowls - for food and water.
- Training treats - for helping with toilet training and
basic training.
- Puppy shampoo - just incase they have an accident!
- Brush/Grooming Kit - get them used to daily grooming at an
early age.
- Food - a good quality, digestible diet can help avert many
ailments both in puppy hood and as they grow. Call in to find out more.
- Name Tag - by law, all dogs must wear a name tag with your
surname, house number and postcode as a minimum.
- Collar and lead - even though your puppy might not be able
to go outside when you get them, getting them used to a collar early is
a good idea.
- Nail clippers - check nails regularly. Specific dog
clippers should be used.
- Flea and Worm treatment - Puppies over 12 weeks should be
fleaed and wormed regularly. For puppies younger then this, call in to
the centre. IMPORTANT - Dog flea treatments are toxic to cats and can
cause death. If you cat and dog are friendly and play lots, keep them
seperate from each other to alow the treatment to dry on their neck
before re-introducing them.
New Cat/Kitten
Check-list
- Stain and Odour Remover - incase they miss the litter tray!
- Litter tray
- Cat Litter
- Litter bags - to line your litter tray and make cleaning
easier.
- Litter scoop
- Bed - a good bed will make them feel secure so they dont
sleep on your bed or on your sofa!
- Bowls - for food and water.
- Food - a good quality, digestible diet can help avert many
ailments both in kitten hood and as they grow. Call in to find out

- Treats
- Brush/Grooming Kit
- Name Tag - should have surname, house number and postcode
as a minimum. A phone number is also a good idea.
- Collar - an elasticated or 'snap lock' collar should allow
your cat to escape if the collar gets snagged on something.
- Flea and Worm treatment - regular treatments will prevent
parasitic infestation such as tapeworm and fleas. Call in for more
details.
- Toys - many have catnip inside them to encourage energetic
play!
- Scratch Post/Mat - a good, sturdy scratching post/mat could
save your sofa or carpet from a shredded fate!
- Carrier - invaluable for when you need to make a trip to
the vets or cattery.
New
Rabbit/Guinea Pig Check-list
- Food - a high fibre, low sugar food will help to keep
dental issues at bay. Note, guineas need to be feed a specific Guiena
Pig food enriched with Vitamin C.
- Food bowl
- Water Bottle
- Bottle Brush
- Treats - they'll enjoy special treats just as much as any
dog!
- Brush/Grooming Kit - some rabbits and guineas have quite
long fur that will require regualr grooming.
- Toys/Tubes - will keep them entertained and occupied
throughout the day and night. Boredom can cause serious health issues.
- Litter tray - Generally rabbits will choose to toilet in a
specific are of the hutch, a litter tray will make cleaning much
easier.
- Litter - a good 'small animal' litter will keep odour down
and reduce flies.
- Carrier - a must have for vet trips or car journeys!
- Hutch/Indoor cage - wether your rabbits or guineas are
indoor or outdoor, good quality housing is a must. Ask us about ideal
sizes.
- Outdoor Run - Rabbits and guineas need to be allowed to run
around and forage in the grass daily.
- Fly strike spray - Flystrike is a very serious condition
that can kill your rabbit or guinea in 24 hours. This topical spray
will deter flys.
- Fly Paper - can be hung around their hutch/run to trap
flys.
- Hutch cleaner - essential for cleaning the hutch and
keeping odours at bay.
- Salt lick - they'll love to lick and nibble at these.
- Vitamin drops - a great liquid supplement to add to their
water to ensure they get all the nutrients they need.
- Hay - a good quality dust extracted hay will provide
essential food required to keep their teeth ground down. Hay dust and
mites can cause serious health problems, dust extraction will remove
these. IMPORTANT - rabbits and guinea pigs should only eat a small
amount of dried food daily as it is a complimentary food as opposed to
a complete food. Approximately 80% of their daily food intake should be
hay thus ensuring that their teeth are kept ground down otherwise they
will continue to grow casuing serious health issues.
- Barley straw - chopped, soft barley straw provides
excellent bedding.
- Forage - dried grass is tasty forage and a tempting treat.
- Harness and lead set
- Nail clippers - nails should be checked regularly and
clipped with small animal clippers.
New Hamster
Check-list
- Food bowl
- Food
- Water Bottle
- Botle Brush
- Treats - hamsters love a special treat!
- Toys/Tubes/Logs - a must for keeping them entertained and
giving them something to chew on!
- Litter tray and litter - hamsters can litter train very
well, keeping their cage cleaner for longer. Ask us how to litter
train!
- Hamster Cage - a good quality cage will keep them inside
their cage and not running around the house! Different hamsters require
different cages, call in to the centre to find out more.
- Cage cleaner - Normal household cleaners can be very toxic
to little critters.
- House/shelter - a little hideaway will make them feel safe
and secure.
- Shredded Paper/J-cloth bedding - excellent for stuffing
into their house. They'll make a comfy nest out of it. Be careful
though, some bedding can cause choking and/or broken limbs! Ask us for
more details.
- Hamster Wheel - a must for burning off energy! Be sure to
choose the right wheel though!
- Salt lick
- Vitamin drops - great for ensuring they get all the
vitamins they need.
- Nail clippers - keeping a check on their little claws is
important. A small animal nail clippers will be required.
